Vallejo residents and businesses are asked to donate suitcases and duffel bags to foster children in recognition of Make a Difference Day on Saturday.

The event is organized by New Beginnings Supportive Services, an outreach program that provides resources for aged-out foster children.

Cynthia Grady, event organizer, said foster children generally move frequently and often don't have luggage to carry their belongings from home to home.

"A lot of times these kids travel around with everything they own in garbage bags," Grady said.

The event, titled Give a Child a Smile, is in conjunction with Make a Difference Day, a national day of helping others.

People all over the country register community service projects for Make a Difference Day and 10 projects will be awarded $10,000 from Paul Newman's charity foundation in April.

Grady hopes to make Give a Child a Smile an annual event and plans on organizing luggage drop-off points throughout the county.

Foster children are encouraged to come to the event Saturday to pick up new luggage, Grady said.

Give a Child a Smile will be 2 to 5 p.m. at the Faith Fellowship Baptist Church at 551 Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo.
